Townes Family Papers, ca. 1908-1984

This collection represents the combined papers of Edgar Eggleston (E.E.) Townes, his brother John C. (J.C.) Townes, Jr., and his son, E.E. Townes, Jr. It primarily showcases the legal work of the Townes brothers and E.E. Townes, Jr. Included is a draft brief of an important U.S. Supreme Court case having to do with segregaton in Texas, styled Terry v. Adams, which Townes & Townes lost concerning the segregated Jaybird Primary of Fort Bend County, Texas. E.E. Townes was one of the founders of the South Texas School of Law, served on the faculty, and was the school's third Dean from 1934-1960. E.E. Townes, Jr. served on the Board of Trustees for the Greater Houston YMCA South Texas Colleges from 1956-1966, and then on the Board of the independent South Texas College of Law from 1966-1986. He lectured for ten years in the law school's annnual oil and gas lecture series. Both J.C. and E.E. Townes, Jr practiced at the Houston law firm of Vinson & Elkins before forming Townes & Townes with E.E Townes.
